Healing the EgoHealing the Ego
by William Lee Rand

This is part of an article from the Winter issue of the Reiki News Magazine.

According to psychology, the ego is the part of ourselves we consider to be who we are as individuals. It is the part consciously in charge of our lives and makes use of our senses, memory, imagination, creativity, and decision making and also initiates action. (1)

The concept of ego in the Western world was first introduced in 1910 by Sigmund Freud in his work with ego psychology. Sigmund Freud’s daughter Anna, Heinz Hartmann, and David Rapaport, further developed Freud’s concepts. (2)

However, the concept of ego had been present in the philosophy of native peoples for a much longer time. As an example, the Hawaiian Huna philosophy contains a concept similar to the ego called the uhane. Huna was developed by the Polynesians who originated in Taiwan over 3000 years ago. (3) Other native peoples also mention the concept of ego. (4)

While the groups cited above held these ideas about the ego, the attitude held by most segments of the spiritual community, and mainstream society, is that the ego is thought of in a derogatory way and is what is holding us back in pursuing spiritual growth. And in fact, we often look on the ego as being self-centered and that it can have many unwanted and unpleasant aspects such as jealousy, anger and revenge. And the only solution that most spiritual paths offer is to ignore and subdue the ego or otherwise get rid of it in some way. The methods that have seemed to work the best are to live in a cave, or to join a monastery and live isolated from society or to live a selfless life devoted exclusively to serving others. An idea promoted by some of these groups is ultimately to succeed at killing the ego, and only then can you truly be spiritual and reap the rewards in this life and, especially, in the afterlife. (5)

However, negativity should not be directed towards the ego, but rather towards the unhealed ego. As previously mentioned, the ego has a positive purpose, and it is only the unhealed aspects of the ego that cause difficulties for us.

The above mentioned methods of dealing with the unhealed ego have some value, and highly motivated people have been able to use them to produce positive results. But they do involve sacrifice and limitations that make them difficult for many to follow, and they are rarely as effective as people would like. Also, they can limit the value that one can offer to society by requiring one to remove oneself from society or restrict involvement to a limited range of activities.

Another method that has produced better results and Reiki people often use is to develop positive qualities in one’s personality, such as kindness, forgiveness, and giving credit to the Higher Power as the guiding force in one’s life. By focusing on these positive qualities, it is easier to keep the unhealthy desires and tendencies of the unhealed ego in the background.

There is another alternative that would make more sense, and that is to heal the ego. However, the main reason people do not focus on healing the ego is that the ego is difficult to heal. So rather than trying to do something difficult, or sometimes impossible for some to do, ignoring the unhealed ego became a popular option.

But, when we ignore the unhealed ego, it doesn’t go away but continues to reside in the subconscious mind. And in fact, it doesn’t like being placed into the subconscious mind, and so to express itself, it attracts people to us that are on “ego trips.” And so, indirectly, we must still deal with our unhealed ego issues as they express towards us through others.

As I became more deeply involved with Holy Fire® healing energy and especially after the gift of Holy Fire® III came along, it became apparent that this new healing energy can actually heal the unhealed ego! This awareness came to me right away when teaching the first Usui/Holy Fire® III Reiki Master class in Kurama, Japan. In this class, my Authentic Self became more apparent, and I found that by diving into it, aspects of the unhealed ego healed. And, as I continued to work with the Holy Fire® III energy, this level of healing seemed to progress on its own and take place automatically in the background as I lived my life. Checking with others who have received Holy Fire® III, there is an agreement that this positive effect is widespread among those who have taken this level of Reiki training.

Healing the ego is a much better solution. After all, we must consider, why would humans have a part of their personality that plays such a prominent role in everyday life unless it had an important purpose. And since the spiritual community actively pursues healing ourselves, what would be more important to heal than the ego?

As people began to experience this healing process taking place within themselves, an amazing revelation took place. We discovered that the purpose of the healed ego is to accomplish our divine purpose on Earth!

What an amazing turnaround this has become. Previously, we thought the ego impeded living a spiritual life, when in reality, once the ego heals, it becomes the channel through which we accomplish this goal!

Why would such a prominent part of our personality exist unless it had a significant purpose? And when you think about it, the healed ego is in the best position to fulfill this task.  If we are going to express something important in the material world, then it is best done by a part of ourselves solidly embedded in the material world.

The purpose of the healed ego is to
accomplish our divine purpose on earth!

How does the Holy Fire® III energy heal the ego? Often it does this by healing the parts of the ego that want to express negatively, transforming them, so they express the positive version of those feelings. As an example, let’s look at jealousy. When we are jealous of others, usually, it is because they have something or possess a talent for which they are receiving positive attention, and instead, we want that talent, and we want all the attention and do not want the other person to have it. When we heal our jealousy, it develops into admiration for the person and the value they bring to society. The tension and horrible feelings we previously had toward them transform into healthy feelings that allow us to relax and be happy about the other person and ourselves. Once in this positive state of admiration, we can more easily gain an understanding of how they developed that talent and how we could do the same if we want to, or we may simply be happy to enjoy watching the person express their talent. The Holy Fire® III energy will manifest this for you; it will heal your jealousy and transform it into admiration. And often, there is nothing you need to do; the healing takes place all by itself under the direction of the Holy Fire®!

Something similar can take place with fear. When we are afraid to do something, what is often happening is that in the back of our minds, we fantasize that if we do this, it will cause something terrible to happen to us. This fantasy is often occurring without our full awareness that it is taking place, and what we are focused on is the feeling of fear that the negative fantasy is generating. Holy Fire® energy will come in and transform the feeling of fear into courage. Then you can more easily direct your mind toward the activity in which you want to engage confidently, clearly see what you need to do and then do it knowing that it will be a healthy learning experience and a new accomplishment.

If there is someone who has deliberately harmed you, rather than allowing feelings of revenge to come welling up within you, the Holy Fire® energy will transform them into love and forgiveness, which will enable you to let it go and be free. And as you do this, you will more easily be able to take responsibility for what happened to you, learn the lesson about what you did to bring this about, and easily focus on the positive and avoid experiences like this in the future.

Similarly, the Holy Fire® III energy will also help you transform anger into patience, sadness into happiness, hate into love, selfishness into benevolence, and self-doubt into confidence. It will also help you convert entitlement into gratitude, laziness into ambition, arrogance into humility, lying into honesty, depression into joy, worry into trust, inferior feelings into self-worth, and rudeness into respect.

Holiday SeasonJoy of the Holiday Season
by William Lee Rand

This is a wonderful time of year when many different religious and sacred holidays are celebrated by people all over the world. This has a powerful uplifting affect on the quality of the spiritual energy surrounding the planet. This can enhance our Reiki sessions as well as fill us with special joy and peace. In order to feel this energy and benefit from it, it is important to acknowledge this possibility and to allow your heart and spirit to tune into the energy. This can feel like wonderful warmth that fills your heart and makes you feel good all over and can also spread from you to others. I hope you will take the time to meditate on the joy and peace of this special time of year. And if you see someone who doesn't seem to feel this energy, then perhaps you can give them a special smile or even a hug if it is someone you know and intend to pass on the energy to them. Joy can be contagious.

This is also a good time to send Reiki to everyone on the planet.

May your life be filled with the greatest love, peace and joy, now and through out the coming year.

Reiki TipsReiki Tips

Did you know you can raise the vibration of the food you eat? Clear and give your food Reiki before you eat it to increase its life force energy! Below are some ways to do this:

Before eating, take a few moments to activate Reiki. Place your hands over your food and while sending Reiki into the food say: "I clear any unwanted energy from this food. I offer gratitude and thanks for the earth, and for all of the people involved in making it possible for this food to be with me. I thank this food for nourishing my body."

This is a very helpful tip while eating out. If you are out at a restaurant you can do this outright or subtly without placing your hands over your food, just take a few moments and intend that it goes into the food in front of you You can do this every meal at home, and it is also very fun to activate Reiki and imbue your food while cooking!

Reiki and Meningitis
A few weeks ago I submitted a request for distant healing for a seven-year-old girl who was suddenly taken ill and appeared to have meningitis. She developed huge swelling around her brain and became unconscious. She was rushed up to Guy's hospital in London and put on life-support. The parents were told she might be brain-damaged if she regained consciousness. They were not hopeful she would be able to breath on her own for a long time, if at all, and they might at some time have to make the decision to switch off the life-support machine.

I spoke to my son, a friend of the girl's father, yesterday and was astonished to hear she was not on the life-support machine and back home. She could walk and talk and was last seen singing and dancing!

She is being monitored to see how she gets on at school now and is still having some physiotherapy on one leg, but what a result! Thank you to all who sent her healing and WELL DONE! What a team!

Caesarian Births
Since my last time of writing I have had the most wonderful Reiki experiences, not just once but three times. Living here in South America it can sometimes be difficult to break with old taboos and family influences. I had the fortune of being invited inside the operating theatre to direct Reiki for three different girls during their Caesarian sections (obviously on different days). I start by giving a full session in the pre-op. Then in the theatre I first of all clean the whole area with Reiki. As the surgeon is about to begin I just put my hands on the patientís head. This has the effect of keeping her calm. As the baby is born I apply Reiki to its solar plexus at the moment the cord is cut. This calms the baby, bringing a look of peace to the childís face. It is as though the child feels Reiki entering his/her being. The post-operative treatment is to treat the wound as soon as the surgeon has finished closing, and the curative period is certainly shorter and more comfortable for the mother. As for the child, he/she is certainly more peaceful and less prone to postnatal problems than many other children I have seen. Please try this if you have the chance.

Love in a Seagull's Eye
Every evening my daughter and I walk the boardwalk along the beach near our home. A few nights ago while walking we happened upon a seagull perched on our path. As we approached it became apparent that the bird was not moving properly and appeared to be in distress. We went to our car for a flashlight, wanting to check and see if there was anything we could do to help. We immediately found a large fishing lure with multiple hooks caught in its beak, which was being pulled towards its side where another hook was embedded in one of its wings. A length of fishing line attached to the lure had wrapped around its foot, holding it awkwardly near its wing. Realizing we needed a cutting tool to remove the hooks, we hurried home and returned with cutters, more flashlights, and my son and husband to assist us. I placed my hands on the bird and immediately began channeling Reiki energy while the others began the arduous task of removing the hooks and fishing line. When I began channeling the Reiki energy the bird calmed down immediately and appeared to be completely relaxed, allowing us to remove the hooks and line. As I was channeling the Reiki energy I was looking into its eyes and it seemed to be looking into mine. I felt connected in a way that was so different (yet so beautiful) than anything I have ever experienced. I know there are those who would argue the point; however, I truly believe what I saw and felt was the seagull channeling its love and gratitude for what we were doing at the same time I was channeling the Divine Reiki healing energy. My son disinfected the wounds and carried the seagull over to a safe place near a tree to set it down, but before he could place the bird on the ground it looked toward us and then flew off into the night. What a wonderful sight. I knew without a doubt that it was God himself that had placed that bird in my path for purpose, and I thank Him for the gift of such a wonderful experience.
