Creating a Reiki Class

This is an excerpt from an article that will appear in the Summer Issue of our Hardcopy Reiki News.

Teaching a Reiki class can be a very rewarding experience. Watching your students receive the ability to give Reiki for the first time can fill your heart with joy for being present at such an important moment in their lives. Having them follow your guidance as they learn how to give Reiki treatments to themselves and other students and seeing their surprise and delight at the new energy they are experiencing is priceless. A well thought out class is a must if you want to provide a meaningful experience for your students. Here are a few ideas that have worked for me.

Preparation
It is important that you have a well thought-out class outline and that you go over it and practice the mediations, demonstrations, discussions and exercises until you feel confident with them. It is also important that you prepare your own energy. Being in a confident, optimistic, compassionate and supportive state of mind is very important. This can be achieved by doing lots of Reiki on yourself, receiving Reiki treatments from others, saying positive affirmations and most importantly, sending Reiki to your students before the class. I suggest you send Reiki days or even weeks before the class. Intend that your students will be deeply healed in the class and that they will become great healers themselves.

Class Materials
A good class manual is a must. It should contain a clear description of what Reiki is, how it works, what it can heal and how to use it. It should also contain diagrams or pictures of all the hand positions for self and others and instructions on how to do the various techniques you will be teaching including how to give a complete treatment.

Creating Group Rapport
It is important that the members of the class quickly develop a positive connected feeling between each other. This class rapport or group consciousness is important for the learning process to unfold effectively. When students have a positive regard for each other they will feel safe. This will help them to relax and be open and receptive to the new material and experiences they will be having. It will also help them open more fully to their own healing process in class. Class rapport can be developed by having the members of the class do things together. This is best started right at the beginning of class. To do this, you can have them do things like smudge each other, do grounding exercises with each other, do introductions while sitting in a circle, or conduct a meditation involving the flow of energy around the circle. I am sure you can think of other exercises similar to this that will build class rapport. Also remember that during the class it will be the state of your consciousness that will have the most important effect on class rapport, so make sure you have an open, positive uplifting regard toward your students and be looking for ways to support and validate them. An important goal is for your students to leave the class with a positive attitude toward Reiki and toward their ability to use it.

Western and Japanese Techniques
In a well thought out class, it is important that students understand the latest information about the history of Reiki and learn both Western and Japanese methods. The Western style introduced by Mrs. Takata has value and focuses on the use of standard hand positions for each client. The original Japanese Reiki Techniques (JRTs) taught by Dr. Usui make use of ones intuition and help the student create treatments that are specifically tailored to the individual needs of the client. The JRTs also contain other valuable techniques such as Gyohi ho - a method of sending Reiki with the eyes, Koki ho, a method of sending Reiki with the breath, Kenyoku - a method for cleansing your energy field, byosen scanning - a method for finding areas in the client that need Reiki. Both methods have value and when taught together give the student a wider range of choices in the use of Reiki.

After Class Follow-up
Your class should include enough practice time to give the student a feeling of confidence in the use of Reiki so that they will be inspired to use it on themselves and others after class. Continued practice is a must. To encourage this, have your students pick a Reiki buddy in class and have them agree to send distant Reiki to each other after class or to meet to exchange treatments with each other. Also, have them commit to giving a certain number of treatments to family and friends. Organizing Reiki share nights are also important. At a share night, students can get together to share Reiki treatments with each other.

Time-Release Reiki
This is a technique developed by Bonnie Bercume which she received during a meditation several years ago. It makes use of distant Reiki and a medicine cloud that is placed over the client. Its purpose it to release Reiki at regular intervals over a 24 hour period.

Here are the instructions:

1. Assuming you have a client you would like to send healing energy to, open the session using the master symbol, the power symbol and the distant symbol.
2. Envision a large radiant cloud of healing energy over the client.
3. As you continue to send Reiki, state the following intention or something similar: "I program this healing intention to fill the Medicine Cloud with Reiki energy and to release and radiate Reiki energy in just the perfect dosage needed every hour on the hour for the next 24 hours to heal (state persons name) to his/her highest and greatest good."

Bonnie has used this method successfully many times and found it useful for pain control, injuries, enhanced healing after surgery, grief and mourning and it can also be used to send healing to members of the family who may be worried about the client.

Reiki Retreat 2002

We have a fantastic Reiki retreat planned this year! It will be held over Labor Day weekend, August 30 to September 2. This year it will be at the Iroquois Springs Retreat Center in the Catskill mountains near Newburgh, NY. Based on past attendance, we are expecting 250 Reiki people or more. The retreat is open to anyone with Reiki One training or higher. All schools and linkages are welcome. People from across the US as well as many from other parts of the world will be attending.

The retreat is a great place to make new Reiki friends and to share Reiki stories and info and to exchange Reiki treatments. In fact, we will have a special club house set up just for Reiki treatments where you can go at anytime or during scheduled events to give and receive Reiki.

We also have a great list of presenters including: Hyakuten Inamoto, a Japanese Reiki master from Kyoto who will be sharing insights about his pure Japanese lineage, Mari Hall, a well known Reiki author and teacher, myself, Michael Baird, Laurelle Gaia and many others. Of special interest will be the work of Ulla Suokko, a talented flautist and Reiki master who will be exploring the healing possibilities of music. She will also be giving live accompaniment to some of the guided meditations.

The retreat is filling up fast, so if you want to insure your space, I suggest you sign up as soon as possible!

Reiki On A Terminal Cancer Patient
I'm a Portuguese nurse, and last year I was working in a Hospital with a terminal cancer patient. She was feeling very strong pain, she was crying a lot and she couldn't sleep at night. Even the morphine didn't work any more. I started to give her Reiki and the first night she fell asleep in 5 minutes and she did not wake up the morning without feeling pain for several hours. Many times she called me "The nurse of the good energies," and Reiki could help her until she died, with less pain and anxiety. Isabel Maria Banquart Dias Leitao do Couto

Perforated Colon and Coma
I had a wonderful learning experience about 3 months ago and I just thought I would like to share it with you. I have a friend who was recently staying at my home as a result of an abusive situation where she had to move out of the home that she shared with her husband. One night she received a call from her sister in law who informed her that her husband was in critical
condition and was not expected to live. My friend felt that no matter what the normal circumstances were that the right thing to do was to go and be with him at that time in the hospital. She requested that I go with her and I suddenly received a spiritual message (guidance) that this would be appropriate so I went. I have been called to the Reiki Master Teacher Level and go where I am guided. When we got to the Hospital her husband was comatose and had a fever of 109 - He had somehow perforated his colon and bile had leaked all through his system. The doctors and nurses said he would die soon.

As she stood by his bed I noticed that she was turning gray so I placed my hand automatically on her back in a gesture of support and love. Immediately a tremendous surge of healing energy began to flow which caused her to regain her color at which time she asked me if I could try Reiki on her husband although she knew that he did not believe in any type
of a higher power. I told her it wasn't up to me but I would ask permission and allow for the highest good for him. I explained that I could give unconditional love and the universe
(God) handled the rest.

I placed my hands on him and the healing surge started again even stronger so I just sent the
energy through his left arm and shoulder, as it was the only area not wired to a monitor. I may have stood there for approx. 2 or 3 hours then the energy flow began to ebb and I knew that I
was finished at that point. I than excused myself to give her a little privacy with him and went to the cafeteria to sit and have some water. I went back in approx. 30 minutes to check on my friend and the room had 3 nurses working on the gentleman.

In 30 minutes his fever dropped to 101 and he came out of the coma so they were disconnecting most of the equipment. The rest of the night he slept normally all of the bile purged itself out of his system and by the next morning he was back to his normal may I say without judgment -self at which point my friend retreated quickly from his proximity and his reach. The couple did not live happily ever after together. My friend is creating a new life for herself. The learning was in seeing the effect that the Reiki Energy had on the husband. The doctors said he had no chance and that he was going to die. But in a matter of less than 6 hours even though he had and still has no belief in God, Reiki, Spirituality or anything else he cannot see, he was healed and he lived.

I guess the energy believed in him or maybe he believes that I believe. He did mention that he heard me asking permission and he remembered seeing himself take hold of my hand in a dream. He just couldn't figure out how I got into his dream he absolutely can't stand me and what he calls my "witchcraft." Of course I truly can take none of the credit for what happened but I truly know that only a higher Universal Life force energy could have assisted him and I know that the doctors and nurses were expecting the gentleman to die. Reiki works in its own way and I have never been other than (well) just a little surprised at what happens sometimes. Thanks, Ellen

Polyps Healed
A while ago my friend Barbara had a scan, which revealed a number of Polyps in her womb area. She was scheduled for minor surgery to have these removed, prior to this I gave her Reiki sessions and distant healing. When she went down for the surgery the Polyps had gone - she's absolutely convinced these had been 'Reikied away' as she likes to call it. A while later she
had Polyps up her nose and again she was convinced Reiki had seemed to help. When she finally went for surgery on them, they hadn't disappeared but she was advised that she would be quite ill for a couple of weeks - she was up and about the next day and has felt absolutely great ever since - again Reiki helped. I have been a Tera-Mai Reiki & Seichem Master now for five months and Barbara is about to be the first person who I attune to Reiki. It really does work, Reiki is like having a constant friend who you can call on to give you help and support when you need it, wouldn't the world be a better place if everyone could use it.
